Houlton/GHCA Track and Field Girls Team Places High Among PVC Schools at League Championships

BREWER, ME – The Houlton/GHCA girls showcased incredible performances as they competed in the PVC Small School Championships, held at Brewer Community School last weekend.

 

Despite having only six athletes that qualified for the championships on the girls’ team, their collective efforts earned them a remarkable total of 62 points, securing an impressive third place in the team standings. Out of the 16 teams participating in the girls’ championship, a notable 13 teams managed to score. Bucksport would win the team title with 164 followed by Orono 131, Houlton/GHCA 62, George Stevens 50, Bangor Christian 37,  Piscataquis 35, Sumner 30, Central 27, Washington Academy 17, Foxcroft Academy and  Mattanawcook Academy 12, Penquis 10, and Narraguagus 2.

 

Competing for the boys were James Brady and Landon Lafferiere, both of whom were able to run to top 10 performances in each of their events, but were unable to grab any coveted scoring positions. Fifteen boys teams were able to score at the meet including Orono 178, George Stevens 67, Foxcroft Academy 62, Bucksport 60,  Washington Academy 55.5, Sumner 48,Central 43, Lee Academy 23, Bangor Christian 14,  Dexter 10,  Greenville 10, Narraguagus 7.5, Blue Hill 4, Penquis Valley 2, and Mattanawcook Academy 1.

 

“Our kids displayed an awe-inspiring level of determination and resilience, even in the face of the hottest temperatures we have seen this year. Their ability to maintain focus and deliver outstanding performances in such challenging conditions is a testament to their unwavering dedication and mental strength,” said Houlton/GHCA assistant William Janakis.

Scoring for the girls was Ariana Ardell with a pair of new personal best times in the 100m (6) and 200m (4); Natalie Johnson with her efforts in the 1600m (3), 800m (4), and 3200m (4); Leanne Ross’ 5th place run in the 1600m; Andrea Ross with her new PR in the High Jump (3) as well as the 3200m; and Teanne Ewings with her PVC Championship run in the girls 800m, as well as, a pair of PVC runner up positions in the girls 1600m and 3200m. The 4×800 team of Johnson, L. Ross, A. Ross, and Ewings also scored a runner-up position at the meet contributing to the team score.

Ariana Ardell – 100m, 200m | 100m, 6th Place,  and 200m, 4th Place
Natalie Johnson – 800m 4th Place, 1600m 3rd Place, and 3200m 4th Place
James Brady – 1600m

Landon Laferriere – 800m

Leanne Ross – 1600m 5th Place

Andrea Ross – 1600m, High Jump | High Jump 3rd Place, 3200m 6th Place

Teanne Ewings – 800m PVC Champion, 1600m 2nd Place, 3200m 2nd Place

Girls 4x800m – New Program and School Record, Team of Johnson, A. Ross, L. Ross, and Ewings – second place.

Middle School’s second meet in Caribou was postponed from last week to this Wednesday, May 31.
