PRESQUE ISLE, Maine – The Aroostook Agency on Aging is set to launch an exciting new initiative aimed at helping older adults in Aroostook County embrace technology. Thanks to a generous $400,000 grant from the Maine Connectivity Authority, the Agency will soon open a “Connectivity Hub” to enhance the technological skills and confidence of seniors, empowering them to thrive in today’s digital age.
For over half a century, the Aroostook Agency on Aging has been a beacon of support and information for the aging community in The County. Recognizing that many seniors haven’t grown up with the digital tools that have become integral to modern life, the Agency saw a pressing need to bridge this gap. While technology offers incredible opportunities for maintaining social connections and accessing vital services, it can also pose daunting challenges, especially when essential services require online access and digital literacy.
“We see technology as an incredible enabler for older adults, but only if they have the skills and confidence to use it,” said Kathryn Harnish, Director of Strategic Initiatives and Communications at the Aroostook Agency on Aging. “This funding from the Maine Connectivity Authority allows us to create a space where older adults can learn and grow in their use of technology.”
Why the Connectivity Hub?
The digital divide is more pronounced in Aroostook County, where older residents are 20% less likely to have high-speed internet access compared to other age groups in northern Maine. They are also more than twice as likely as their peers statewide to lack home connectivity. This lack of access has led to a considerable skill gap, leaving many older adults hesitant and unsure about using digital devices, often due to concerns about privacy and security.
“Many of our older consumers have not yet fully realized the benefits of technology, including social connection and access to essential services,” added Harnish. “Our program aims to provide a safe and trusted environment for technology education, helping older adults confidently engage with the digital world.”
The Tech Connect Center
At the heart of the Connectivity Hub initiative is the creation of a “Tech Connect Center” at the Agency’s Presque Isle location. This welcoming environment will be staffed by friendly, tech-savvy volunteers dedicated to guiding seniors through the digital landscape. Here, older adults will gain hands-on experience with technology, opening doors to lifelong learning, telehealth services, virtual social engagement, and more.
The Connectivity Hub will also introduce seniors to emerging technologies, such as virtual reality and smart assistants, ensuring they are not left behind in a rapidly advancing world. Moreover, understanding the financial barriers many face, the program will include a lending library, allowing seniors to borrow iPads, Wi-Fi hotspots, smart devices, and more to use at home.
“Our goal is to make technology accessible and understandable for older adults,” said Harnish. “When people are connected in this way, they experience higher levels of physical, emotional, and social wellness.”
Community Support and Collaboration
The Connectivity Hub is one of three projects in Aroostook County to receive support from the Maine Connectivity Authority. Joy Barresi Saucier, Executive Director of the Agency, highlighted the importance of this collaboration, stating, “We’re grateful to the Maine Connectivity Authority for recognizing the opportunities here in The County, and we’re in terrific company with Caribou Public Library and the Houlton Band of Maliseet Indians, who have also received funding to tackle this important digital equity work.”
The Aroostook Agency on Aging invites community members to support this vital initiative. “Whether through donations, volunteering, or spreading the word, your involvement can help bridge the digital divide and enhance the quality of life for older adults in Aroostook County,” Barresi Saucier added.
