Houlton, Maine – As Earth Day week drew to a close, the Shiretown community witnessed a flurry of activity as local groups came together to embark on separate yet equally impactful cleanup efforts. From the diligent work of the Houlton Varsity Track and Field Team to the enthusiastic participation of the Community Living Association (CLA) and Houlton Parks and Recreation Department, volunteers showcased their dedication to environmental stewardship and community well-being.
The Houlton High School Varsity Track and Field team took advantage of their practice time on Friday, April 26, to engage in a fun and meaningful initiative. Competing in a friendly intersquad challenge, the student-athletes focused their efforts on cleaning up areas around the Bird Farm, Houlton High campus, Just for Kids park, Community Park, the Millar Civic Center, and Region Two. In just one hour, the team managed to collect an impressive 500 pounds of trash, significantly enhancing the cleanliness and aesthetics of the greater campus area.
Meanwhile, volunteers from the Community Living Association and Houlton Parks and Recreation Department converged on Riverfront Park to spruce up the beloved recreational spot. Despite being separate from the track team’s efforts, their dedication was equally remarkable. On this beautiful spring day, volunteers enjoyed the fresh air and sunshine as they worked tirelessly to collect over 25 bags of trash, along with 2 propane tanks, ensuring that the park remains clean and inviting for all to enjoy during the summer months.
As the cleanup efforts concluded, attention turned to The Cary Library, where the voting period for Recycled Arts Projects on display came to an end. Exhibits will be collected on Monday, and the votes will be tallied, adding another layer of community engagement to the Earth Day celebrations.
In a reflection of the overarching theme of inclusivity, it was emphasized that volunteering is an important part of community life, empowering individuals from all walks of life to contribute to the betterment of their surroundings. When everyone participates, it truly is a win-win for the community.
The Shiretown community extends its heartfelt gratitude to all volunteers for their dedication and commitment to creating a cleaner, greener, and more inclusive environment for all.
