FORT KENT, Maine – The University of Maine at Fort Kent Behavioral Science program and club, Fish River Rural Health, Aroostook Mental Health Center, and Life By Design have been working together to host its annual Recovery Celebration on September 23rd at the Fort Kent Riverside Park Lion’s Pavilion.
September is National Recovery month, a national observance held every September to celebrate people in recovery while highlighting the benefits of prevention, treatment, and recovery for substance use and mental disorders.
Katia Sirois, LADC, CCS, a Substance Abuse Counselor with AMHC and one of the event organizers shared, “Community support is such a vital part for recovery to occur. In order to heal people need to feel connected and welcomed and having these events shows that people care and we hear and see you.”
The event begins at 11 a.m. with free food and music by the Rocking Ukes. Starting at noon, speakers will share their recovery stories, followed by time for networking, open conversations about recovery and available resources.
“This year marks our 6th annual Recovery Celebration in Fort Kent. Each September, we try to challenge the stigma associated with addiction and recovery, supporting individuals and their families on their recovery journeys”, said UMFK Associate Professor of Counseling, Dr. Shawn Graham.
Sponsors of the event include the Town of Fort Kent, Paradis Shop ‘n Save, Tim Hortons and Marden’s.
