Cross Country Scores Best Program Finishes at Regional Championships

Belfast, ME – October 28, 2023 – The Houlton/GHCA Cross Country teams traveled to Belfast this past weekend and delivered exceptional performances at the Northern Maine Regional Cross Country Championships, where both the girls’ and boys’ teams achieved podium finishes.  The girls’ claimed the regional championship title with a decisive victory, while the boys’ team took second place on the backs of outstanding individual performances.

 

The Houlton/GHCA boys’ team excelled at the regionals, capturing second place in a highly competitive race.  Malachi Witmer led the team with a 3rd-place finish in 17:16.37, followed by Brayden Drake, who finished 4th in a time of 17:25.59.  James Brady and Nathan Brady rounded out the team’s top finishes, placing 6th and 12th.  The score would be complete when freshman Jackson Adams crossed the line with a 13 second new personal best time of 24:09.27 to add the fifth and final tally.

 

The Orono High School boys took first place with 23 points, while Houlton/GHCA secured second with 77 points, followed closely by George Stevens Academy in third place with 79 points.  The top six placing schools and the top 30 individuals all advance to the State Championships next week.

The Houlton/GHCA girls’ team dominated the race, taking the top spot and bringing home the regional title.  Leading the charge, senior standout Teanne Ewings captured 1st place with an impressive time of 18:17.30, closely followed by teammate Natalie Johnson in 2nd at 18:52.37. Andrea Ross and Katie McQuarrie also contributed to the team’s success with strong finishes in the top ten, placing 6th and 9th with times of 21:42.63 and 22:12.40, respectively.  Dalayna Mincey capped off the team scoring with her 17th place finish in 23:36.30.  Kylah Tuttle and Amelia Drake rounded out the displacing scores in 31st and 36th place finishes.

 

The team’s combined performance resulted in a score of 23 points, securing first place over George Stevens Academy, who placed second with 47 points, and Narraguagus High School, who finished third with 60 points.  Houlton/GHCA’s consistency and determination earned them their well-deserved title, and the team is eager to carry this momentum into the upcoming state championships.

With their sights set on the state title, both the Houlton/GHCA boys’ and girls’ teams are gearing up for the Maine Class C State Championships, set to take place in Cumberland, ME, on Saturday, November 2, at 11:00 a.m.  Coaches and athletes are motivated by the regional achievements and look forward to representing their community at the state level.  The Greater Houlton Cross Country program extends its thanks to coaches, families, and supporters who have helped make this season successful.
