Ewings wins the state title in the 1600 meter run

Houlton-GHCA track and field team compete in Class C championship

The Houlton-Greater Houlton Christian Academy Track and Field team traveled to Lewiston over the weekend for the Class C State Championships.  The day started out unseasonably cool, which was a treat for our distance runners, but may have been detrimental for our athletes on the field, explained Coach Chris Rines.

“Despite this, our girl’s team was able to rack up 36 points among the best competition we have faced all year, which is our highest total accumulation at the state level ever,” he said.  This was good

for sixth place overall, which ties our best placing from a year ago. The boys had a single lone scorer, Daniel Ross in the 1600m.  He managed to run ahead of his seeded placement and claim a fourth place for four team points.

The girls scoring got underway with the first event of the meet, the girls 4x800m relay.  The team of Natalie Johnson, Leanne Ross, Abby Duff, and Elena Ardell (running order), started out strong and actually led for the middle two legs of the event, Rines said, before a strong anchor leg out of Orono eventually pulled away from Elena. They finished second to earn eight points.

“Our next points came from the girls 1600m as freshman sensation Teanne Ewings took home the state championship in a 5:02.47,” said Rines. “This was a two-second improvement over her time from just a week ago, and after the Class A and B results are figured into the mix, is the third fastest girl’s 1600m in the state regardless of class this season.”

Sam Johnson was the next Shire up for scoring in the girl’s 400m. “Sam has been super consistent with this even every season of her career and it was no different this day,” added Rines. Her 1:05.26 was good for sixth and two points.

Ewings once again took to the track for the girls 800m next. “Teanne has really been a dominant force in the 800m all season,” Rines said. “She has had some close calls in her 1600m wins, but when it comes to the 800m, there really hasn’t been anyone near her all year.” She brought home her second state championship of the meet in this event with a comfortable 2:24.77, about six seconds over second place.

The last points of the meet came from our second relay team, our girls 4x400m.  The trio of Sam Johnson, Isabella Ardell, and Elena Ardell have had great success in this event the

last three years, with a second-place finish as a freshman (with older sister Emma) and a state championship as juniors last year (also with Emma).  They were joined by Ewings this season and ran very ell, but the competition was ready to challenge them.  In the end, the team came in third place with a 4:33.37.

Also competing were – Ariana Ardell (100m, Long Jump, Triple Jump), Jayden Swimm (Discus), Kaitlyn Kenney (Shot Put, Discus, Javelin), Sam Duff (Triple Jump, Javelin, 4×400), Phillip Espenscheid (4x400m), and Terry Valles (4x400m)
