Donato Steps Down As Orono Coach

MBHOF Coach Doesn't Rule Out Coaching Again

After four seasons as coach of the Orono Red Riots girls basketball team, John Donato is stepping down.

The 74-year-old Donato is one of only nine high school coaches with over 500 wins. In his four seasons at Orono the Red Riots went 16-52.

Donato began his coaching career at Houlton High School. His Shiretowner girls teams won multiple regional and state Class B titles in the 1980s.

He also won a Class A state championship coaching at Lawrence High School in 2015.

Donato also spent time coaching at Messalonskee, Mt. View and Hall-Dale.

He was inducted into the Maine Basketball Hall of Fame in 2019.
