Ewings named outstanding female athlete at PVC Meet

Houlton-GHCA track squad has strong showing

ORONO – The combined Houlton-GHCA track squad came out strong at the PVC small school track meet in Orono at their newly renovated track and field stadium.  The day started out quite warm and muggy, but eventually as night began to fall the temperatures cooled off and overall made for some great running conditions.

The 4 x 800-meter relay team of  Natalie Johnson, Abigail Duff, Elena Ardell, and Leanne Ross kicked the day off strong, taking home the first PVC Championship in the event.  The girls started out in front from the start and never looked back.

Teanne Ewings was named outstanding female athlete of the meet, as voted on by the coaches of the PVC teams.  “Unlike the Aroostook League, which awards their top-performing athletes, the award solely based on points accrued, the PVC takes into consideration coach’s opinions on the top performances, as well,” said Coach Chris Rines.

Ewings narrowly won the 1600m with just a margin of six-100ths of a second over second place, Ruth White of Orono.  Both times of 5:04 are the top two fastest times by a high school girl in Maine this season, regardless of class.  The 5:04 was again a US National Second Team standard performance according to MileSplit.

Ewings returned to the track for the 400m with a fourth-place finish just 20 minutes later, and another half hour after that, brought home the win in the 800 meters, again upsetting Orono’s White by two seconds.  She closed the meet with a team win in the girls’ 4x400m relay with teammates Isabella Ardell, Elena Ardell, and Samantha Johnson.

The girl’s team took home third place overall at the meet, which is our highest finishing place ever at this championship.

Katie McQuarrie starting her 300m Hurdle heat.

The boy’s team, understaffed, was unfortunately unable to find any points in the tough competition.  Senior Daniel Ross and Junior JJ Bourgoin were unable to compete and a few mishaps in Javelin for Junior Samuel Duff as well as a very competitive field in Triple jump did not yield any scoring places.

Terry Valles setting his new personal best in the Long Jump.

Freshman Phillip Espenscheid also received a DQ in the Race Walk for form violations.
