Ewings State Champion, Leads Greater Houlton XC girls to Runners Up Trophy

Cumberland, ME — This past Saturday, November 2, the Greater Houlton Cross Country team made a memorable showing at the Maine Class C State Championships, held at Twin Brook Recreational Facility in Cumberland.  Competing against the top cross-country runners from across Maine, Houlton’s runners put in some impressive performances on a challenging course – some even achieving new personal bests, individual honors, and a team podium finish.

The Houlton Boys’ team entered the State Championships as the #2 seed from the North, while the Houlton Girls’ team went in as the top seed. The girls’ team ultimately secured the title of State Runners-Up behind a strong Waynflete squad, falling just shy by three team points.

Individual Highlights and Top Finishers

A major highlight for Houlton came from senior Teanne Ewings, who clinched the Class C State Champion title, finishing with a remarkable time of 18:38.95. This win caps off an incredible season for Teanne, whose hard work and dedication have been nothing short of inspiring.  She will move on to represent Maine in the New England Championships in Manchester, Connecticut, next weekend.  This will be Teanne’s fourth trip to the Cross Country New Englands and her eighth overall New Englands appearance.

Teanne wasn’t the only Houlton athlete to earn a top spot: Natalie Johnson, who finished 6th in 19:40.23, will also join Teanne at the New England Championships. Both girls’ advancements mark an exciting opportunity to compete on a larger stage among New England’s elite runners.  This will be Natalie’s third trip to the Cross Country New Englands.

On the boys’ side, Houlton saw strong finishes as well. Malachi Witmer led the Houlton Boys’ team, finishing in 8th place with a time of 17:44.36, followed closely by Brayden Drake in 9th place at 17:48.83 and James Brady in 14th at 18:07.98. These performances underscored the depth and dedication of Houlton’s boys’ team, with runners pushing through a tough course to earn top placements.
