Ewings top 20 in New England Cross-Country championship

Greater Houlton runners finish well

Both Teanne Ewings and Natalie Johnson did exceptionally well at this weekend’s New England Cross Country Championships hosted by Ponaganset High School in North Scituate, RI.

“The weather looked wary heading into the event, as looming remnants of hurricane Nicole were threatening the area,” said Greater Houlton coach Chris Rines. “But as soon as runners began to arrive on site the clouds parted and the sun came out for a beautiful day.  It was about 70 degrees come race time and we couldn’t have asked for better conditions.

“The girls ran really well, the course was one of the quicker ones we have had this season and certainly much faster than last year’s course in Vermont,” he added. According to Rines, the girls really rose to the challenge running against the best competition they have seen all year.
“Just about every girl in this race is an all-conference, all-state, league, or state champion in their home states and every one of these girls had to run incredibly well to be in this race,” Rines said.

Johnson one of the last Maine Qualifiers to make the cut for New Englands (24 out of 25), managed to finish better than half the field as she came in 105  out of the 245 girls who participated.
Ewings was able to climb the ranks early and settled into the 18 – 24 spot for much of the race, coming through the 4K mark in 21st.  Her finishing drive to the line allowed her to pass a few more and she was able to land with 19th overall place.
The top 25 individuals were honored with ‘All New Englands’ status and presented with a medal for their accomplishments. Ewings’ finish is now Houlton’s best finish at the NE Championships, besting her 52 place effort from a year ago.
