The local high school tennis scene witnessed an intense match-up yesterday, May 4th, 2023, as the Houlton/GHCA varsity girls and boys tennis teams faced off against their rivals from Fort Kent. The competition was fierce, with both sides showing great skill and sportsmanship.
In the girls’ team event, Fort Kent emerged victorious with a 4-1 win over Houlton/GHCA. Fort Kent’s Anah Albert triumphed over Sophie Lorom (8-2) in the first singles match, while Julia Cyr bested Ryan Perfitt (8-4) in the second singles match. Houlton/GHCA’s Natalie DeLucca managed to secure the only win for her team, defeating Hannah Lovely (8-2) in the third singles match. In the doubles category, Fort Kent continued their winning streak, with Madeline Philbrook and Mia Voisine defeating Mariah Peterson and Cindy Hannigan (8-3), and Logan Stedt and Shelby Theriault overcoming Karyssa Kenney and Kealy Britton (8-1).
The boys’ team event was dominated by Fort Kent, winning 5-0 against Houlton/GHCA. Nathan Voisine defeated Kohl Skehan (8-0) in the first singles match, and Connor Voisine followed suit with an 8-1 win over Jarod Toner in the second singles match. Unfortunately, Houlton/GHCA forfeited both boys’ doubles matches, giving Fort Kent’s Bryce Valecourt and Quinn Michaud a win in the first doubles match and Aadyn Connor and Jered Babin a victory in the second doubles match. The third singles match between Mason Koehler and Oliver Caron ended in a draw (0-0).
The action-packed day showcased the incredible talent of these young athletes, proving that the future of tennis in our local community is bright.
