Runners did not disappoint in Caribou Invitational

Ewings takes first place in girls varsity; Ross second in tight boy's race

On Saturday at Caribou High School, the Houlton/GHCA varsity teams took to the rolling hills and trails behind the Caribou athletic fields. The Caribou Invitational features a unique format that offers runners who may not normally win a race during the regular season an opportunity to do so.  Each varsity section was split into seven races for the boys and girls and our Houlton/GHCA runners did not disappoint.

In the girl’s heats, the squad had three individual race winners in Teanne Ewings (GV#1), Leanne Ross (GV#2), and Elena Ardell (GV#3).  McKenna Phillips ran to a  second place in her race (GV#6), and rounding out the varsity girls races were all third-place finishers in Calli Sylvia (GV#4), Isabella Ardell (GV#5), and Hope Royal (GV#7).
Ewings’ time of 20:06.82 was the fastest by a Maine freshman girl so far this season for the 5k distance.

The meet was scored by taking a school’s five best finishing places.  This resulted in the Houlton girls taking top team honors with eight points over number two John Bapst (12), number three Brewer (20), and number four Caribou (22).

nd Old Town also competed, but did not have team scores.

In conventional scoring, the Houlton/GHCA girls still win the meet with 37 points.
In the boy’s heats, senior Daniel Ross ran to a thrilling finish in Boys Varsity #1, going toe-to-toe with a Caribou runner for the entirety of the race and finishing just shy of him at the line.  Phillip Espenscheid ran to a new personal best and third-place finish in BV#4.  Our lone Hodgdon runner, Jeremiah Bourgoin claimed a second-place finish in BV#6 and Kristian Kellerhals claimed 6th in BV#7.

The boys did not post a team score as they do not have enough runners to score to do so.  John Bapst was the overall boy meet winners with a score of five, Caribou second scoring 15, third, Old Town (16), fourth, Brewer (21), fifth, Presque Isle (22), sixth, Ellsworth (24), seventh, MSSM (33), and Foxcroft no score.

In the JV Races, the Houlton team had three athletes competing and all three, according to coach Chris Rines, saw big drops in their times from the first meet of the season.  Running to third place in the girl’s JV race was Amelia Drake followed in fifth by teammate Danlen Espenscheid.  JV Boy’s runner Jack Hodgkins came in 21st.
