Make it five straight wins to start the season for the UMaine women’s basketball team. And, dating back to last season, make it 15 consecutive wins.
The Bears 52-49 victory at Hartford Wednesday afternoon came 24 hours after they had blown out the Hawks by 28 points Tuesday afternoon. This one came down to a missed three-point shot by Hartford at the buzzer.
UMaine didn’t take its first lead until the final minute of the third quarter and then fended off the Hawks in the fourth quarter.
Senior Blanca Millan continues to lead the Black Bears in scoring, netting 22 points. Dor Saar added 13 and 10 points for Anne Simon.
Nina Farkic led the Hawks with 13.
UMaine starts a season at 5-0 (2-0 AE) for the first time since 1986 and just the fourth time in program history.
Hartford falls to 0-2 (0-2 AE).
The Black Bears are off until a weekend series at New Hampshire on January 2nd and 3rd.
NOTE: Millan earns America East Conference Player of the Week honors for the second straight week and for the 10th time in her brilliant career. She is averaging almost 20 PPG along with eight rebounds and three steals. Millan moved past Sigi Koizar for 7th place on the UMaine all-time scoring list (1,678 Points).
