The Maine Principals’ Association (MPA) has announced that while skill-building and conditioning for winter high school sports can begin on Monday, December 7th, team-based practices and scrimmages are being delayed until January 4th.
The decision pushes the start of team activities from December 14th date to that January 4th date.
The decision, which was made in collaboration with the Maine School Boards Association, the Maine School Superintendents Association, the Maine Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association and the Mills Administration, comes as Maine continues to see an increase in COVID-19 cases, hospitalizations, and positivity rate. – MPA Release
The drills and conditioning phase will include limited numbers of participants, face coverings for all, physical distancing and no close contact.
The MPA says this phase will at least allow student athletes the opportunity to participate in school sports to a limited extent during the delay to get to the next phase.
The State of Maine has also aligned its Guidance for Community Sports Activities to align with these changes.
