Former Orono High School standout Jackson Coutts is going to get a chance to play pro baseball after signing a free agent contract with the Washington Nationals. There was a chance he might have been drafted by a MLB team but last week’s draft was cut from 40 rounds down to five.
Coutts just finished his junior year at Division I University of Rhode Island. The Rams played 13 games before the NCAA cancelled the rest of the spring season. He was URI’s leading hitter with a .451 batting average. He had four home runs and 12 RBI.
The 1B/OF helped lead the Orono Red Riots to the Class C state title in 2017. Coutts won the Dr. John Winkin Mr. Maine Baseball Award in ’17.
His father, Mike, is a former UMaine baseball player and current UMaine softball coach.
Congratulations to @GoRhodyRams OF Jackson Coutts for signing as an Undrafted Free Agent with the @Nationals. #MLBDraft2020 pic.twitter.com/tKnDgu2Tin
