Potato Harvest Throughout the Years

Welcome to SADC Flashback with Leigh Cummings, a history segment airing every Thursday at 1:20 PM, brought to you by the Southern Aroostook Development Corporation (SADC) and WHOU. This series explores the rich history of Houlton and the surrounding area.

This week, Leigh brings with him a recording made by the late Catherine “Kay” (Brown) Bell, of Houlton, talking about her memories of growing up on an Aroostook County potato farm during the first half of the 20th century.  She talks about her earliest memories of picking potatoes as young girl and her memories of when German POW’s would work their farm during the days of Camp Houlton in the mid 1940’s.

Tune in each week for more fascinating stories about Houlton’s past, as we continue to uncover the historical roots that shaped the community.

Originally aired on September 26, 2024.
