UMaine’s Montgomery Named Boston Bruins Head Coach

B's Pick Monty To Replace Cassidy Behind The Bench

The Boston Bruins have hired former University of Maine hockey captain Jim Montgomery to be their next head coach, replacing Bruce Cassidy. Montgomery becomes the 29th coach in Bruins history.

“The Boston Bruins are pleased to introduce Jim Montgomery as the next head coach of the Boston Bruins and welcome Jim, his wife, Emily, and his children, JP, Colin, Ava and Olivia, to the city of Boston,” said Sweeney. “Jim has a winning history, and throughout the interview process he conveyed his ability to connect with all types of players while also demanding that his teams play with structure. We are excited for Jim to begin to make his imprint on our team.” – Bruins Press Release

Montgomery played at UMaine from 1989 to 1993 and captained the Black Bears to the school’s first national championship in his senior year when the Bears finished 41-1-2. He is UMaine’s all-time leading scorer with 301 points. His number 19 has been retired at Alfond Arena.

Monty takes over the Boston Bruins after serving as an assistant coach for the St. Louis Blues for two seasons. From 2018 to 2020 he was head coach for the NHL’s Dallas Stars. He was fired for ‘unprofessional conduct’ and later checked into a treatment facility for alcohol abuse.

The 53-year-old Montgomery coached a USHL team to a national championship and then led the University of Denver to a national collegiate title before taking the NHL job in Dallas.

He takes over a Bruins team that was ousted in the first round of the NHL playoffs. General Manager Don Sweeney recently was awarded a contract extension. Sweeney then fired head coach Bruce Cassidy last month. Cassidy was then hired as new head coach of the Las Vegas Golden Knights.
