Black Bears Resume Play This Week

UMaine Teams Hit The Road For Games

After a two week pause, the University of Maine Black Bears hockey and basketball teams have been given the green light to resume play.

All of the games scheduled for this week are on the road…

Women’s Basketball: Dec. 10 at Providence; Dec. 11 at Rhode Island

Women’s Ice Hockey: Dec. 11–12 at New Hampshire

Men’s Ice Hockey: Dec. 11–12 at New Hampshire

Men’s Basketball: No games scheduled until Dec. 19–20 at Hartford

In a press release Tuesday evening, UMaine officials cited over 1,000 covid tests since November 24th on winter sports athletes, coaches and staff. None have come back positive.

“Our return to competition has prioritized the safety of our student-athletes and Maine communities,” says UMaine President Joan Ferrini-Mundy. “We are incredibly proud of how hard and responsibly our student-athletes have prepared for this season. Our players and coaches are ready, and all of Black Bear Nation will be cheering them on!”

The men’s hockey games were scheduled for Alfond Arena in Orono but the state’s 50-person limit becomes an issue. The games will be played at the Whittimore Center in Durham, New Hampshire.

It is possible the UMaine basketball teams can stay under that 50 limit and may be able to host home games.

University officials say they continue to monitor developments with the pandemic and will assess opportunities to host games in Orono for all winter sports.
