Ewings first local runner to reach New England championship

GHCA freshman finishes 52nd overall

This weekend’s New England Championship in Thetford, Vermont, officially closed out the Cross Country season for the Greater Houlton team this year. The first runner to make it this far, GHCA freshman Teanne Ewings, ran on an already tough course, which was made exponentially harder by the rain received over the weekend. There were 259 athletes in the Girl’s race. “Teanne ran very well given the conditions,” said Coach Chris Rines. Ultimately, she came through the line in a time of 21:06.3, good enough for 52nd overall.

The only other Aroostook County athlete, junior Kaylee Bell of Caribou, came in about a minute later with a 22:26.7 for a 139th place finish.  That’s about 82 runners in a minute and 20 seconds.  Orono’s sophomore sensation Ruth White was the overall race winner in a time of 18:44.8.  Ruth, Teanne, and Kaylee all have personal bests of 17:28, 19:03, and 20:09 respectively, from this season, so you can see just how tough this course really was with the times they were able to turn in, explained Rines.
