Augusta, ME – The Maine Principals’ Association (MPA) is pleased to announce that Shawn Vincent, Principal at Bruce M. Whittier Middle School in Poland, has been named Maine’s NASSP Principal of the Year for 2023.  He will be honored by the MPA at an awards banquet at the Spring Conference on April 27, 2023.

Mr. Vincent receives this award because of his dedication to his school and community.  All hold Mr. Vincent in the highest regards.  According to one student, “When we walk through this door, it feels like home.”  He is a strong role model for his staff, students, and community.

In announcing Mr. Vincent’s selection as 2023 Maine’s NASSP Principal of the Year, MPA Executive Director of the Professional Division, Dr. Holly Blair noted, “Mr. Vincent creates an empowering and familial culture for all.  He is a self-less leader.  He coaches and supports the way things are done at his school, as well as, with his colleagues around the state.”

Mr. Vincent received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Middle School Education / English Language and Literature from Gordon College in 1997 and his Masters Degree in Educational Leadership from the University of Southern Maine in 2012.

Mr. Vincent began his teaching career in 1998 where he was an English Language Arts teacher in Wilmington, Massachusetts, before moving to Maine and becoming an English Language Arts teacher at Bruce M. Whittier Middle School in Poland.  In 2006, he added to this role and became a part time Middle School Dean at Whittier in 2006.  Two years later, Mr. Vincent was the Assistant Principal at both Poland Community School and Bruce M. Whittier, and finally became the full time Principal at the Bruce M. Whitter Middle School in 2012.  He has served in this role ever since.

He is a member of the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP), The New England League of Middle Schools, serves on the USM Educational Leadership Advisory Board, and is a member of the Maine Principals’ Association (MPA).

The Maine Principals’ Association is a professional association representing Maine’s K-12 principals, assistant principals, and career and technology center directors.  The Association dates to 1921 and focuses its work on promoting the principalship, supporting principals as educational leaders, and promoting and administering interscholastic activities in grades 9-12.
