Varsity Track & Field Off to Strong Start with Impressive Performances at First Meet

Old Town, ME – The varsity track and field team started their season on a high note at the Old Town High School meet on Friday, April 19. With twelve schools in attendance, the early season competition was quite a draw but for our athletes, just the chance to get in a track and field facility was a win in itself.

Dalylah Mincey starts her high school Track & Field career off with a great debut in the girls Javelin.

The girls’ team had an impressive first outing, finishing second overall. Their hard work over the first four weeks of the season paid off, amassing 112.5 team points from 18 scoring places. The boys’ team also showed great promise, finishing in 6th place and demonstrating their potential for the season ahead with a score of 35 points from nine scoring positions which included one relay team.

Securing individual event wins on the day were Ariana Ardell (200m), Victoria Ervin (100m Hurdle), and Teanne Ewings (800m, 1600m, 3200m). Contributing greatly to the team score for the girls came from second place finishes from Ardell (100m), Natalie Johnson (1600m, 3200m), Leanne Ross (800m), and Amelia Drake (Discus). Rounding out the girls tally were scoring finishes by Ardell (Long Jump – 5), L. Ross (1600m – 3), Andrea Ross (1600m – 6, 3200m – 3, High Jump – 4), Ella McCarthy (High Jump -5), and Victoria Ervin (Shot Put -5).

On the boys side the scoring peaked with a strong second place from sophomore James Brady in the boy’s 3200m run. He was followed by teammate Malachi Witmer for 3rd place points in the event. Also helping out team scoring were Brady’s 3rd place points from the 1600m & 6th place points from Javelin. Witmer would also add 4th place 1600m, and 6th place 800m run to the tally. Landon Laferriere contributed his 4th place 800m run and 6th place 1600m to the scores as well. The 4x400m Relay team of Brady, Laferriere, Terry Valles, and Shawn Coty would run to 4th place event points.

Terry Valles marked his return to track with great lengths in the boys long jump.

Several athletes also achieved career personal best marks – Ardell (Javelin), Drake (Javelin, Discus), Johnson (1600m, 3200m), Terry Valles (200m), and James Brady (Javelin, 3200m).

“We are incredibly proud of our team’s performance at the Old Town High School meet,” said varsity assistant coach Ellen Dyer.  “Their hard work and determination have been evident throughout the preseason, and it’s nice for them to see their workouts translate into success on the track.”

Natalie Johnson started her season strong with two new personal best times.

The overall victors of the meet were the Old Town girls and Caribou boys, who also had strong performances throughout the day.

Next up for Track & Field is our Middle School program taking on the Aroostook County league teams in Presque Isle on Tuesday, April 23 and our Varsity team will be on the road again to the Bangor area when we travel to Cameron Stadium on Saturday, April 27.
